Your Best Race Starts Long Before the Start Line

Every great race has a secret, and it has nothing to do with the day itself. It's built in the weeks beforehand — in the runs you do, the strength you build, and the consistency you keep. Whether your next Wizz Air Venicemarathon event is your first or your fastest yet, here's how to train so you arrive at the start line genuinely ready.
To take the guesswork out of it, we've teamed up with Runna by Strava, the #1 running coaching app, to build you a personalised plan around your goal, your fitness and your schedule. Your first two weeks are free.

Build your base, the boring-but-brilliant way The foundation of every strong runner is easy, steady mileage — runs at a pace where you could hold a conversation. It feels almost too gentle, but done consistently, this is what makes race pace feel easier when it counts. Resist the urge to run every session hard.

Runna's mileage insights help you build up week on week safely, so you progress without tipping into injury or burnout.

Get stronger to truly boost your running Strength work is the thing most runners skip and most runners need. A short, focused session just twice a week makes you more efficient and far more resilient when fatigue sets in late in a race.

Runna's strength sessions are built specifically for runners so there's no guesswork about what to do or why.

Be consistent, not heroic One brilliant week followed by three missed ones won't get you there. The runners who improve are the ones who show up steadily, week after week. Little and often beats big and sporadic every time.

Your Runna plan flexes around your life, so a busy week reshapes your training instead of derailing it.

Whatever you're training for, Runna gets you to your goal — and then gets you even further:
●    Run Further Plan — safely build up to a longer distance
●    Run Faster Plan — sharpen your speed and fitness
●    Race-Specific Plans — personalised to the unique demands of your chosen race

The work you do now is what you'll feel on race day. Start today.

Why Mobility Might Be the Most Underrated Part of Your Training

Ask most runners how they'd get faster and they'll say the same things: run more, run harder, maybe add some strength. All true. But there's a piece that quietly underpins all of it — and most people skip it. Mobility.

Mobility is your body's ability to move freely and with control through its full range of motion. When it's there, everything works better: your stride is smoother, your form holds together when you're tired, and you bounce back quicker between sessions. When it's missing, you get tight hips, niggles that won't shift, and a stride that's fighting itself with every step.

The good news? Building it doesn't take much — and it's one of the most enjoyable parts of training once you start.

Why mobility makes such a difference

It's easy to treat mobility work as the optional extra you'll get to "one day." Here's why it earns a proper place in your week:

  • Fewer injuries. So many running niggles come from tightness and imbalance — restricted hips, a stiff back, weak stabilising muscles. Mobility work loosens what's tight and strengthens what isn't pulling its weight, taking pressure off the joints and tendons that usually complain first.
  • A more efficient stride. More range of motion means a freer, more powerful stride for the same effort. You stop wasting energy fighting your own stiffness.
  • Better recovery. Gentle, intentional movement on easy and rest days boosts circulation, releases tension, and leaves you fresher for your next quality session.
  • The runners still going strong years from now are usually the ones who looked after how their body moves, not just how fast it goes.
  • A mental reset. In a sport obsessed with numbers, mobility is a chance to slow down, breathe, and reconnect with how your body actually feels — calmer in, calmer out.

Three ways to build it: yoga, pilates and stretching

These three overlap, but each brings something distinct:

Yoga is all about flow, flexibility and breath. It loosens you up, opens tight hips and shoulders, and is brilliant for reconnecting with your body after a hard run. It's as much about how you feel as how you move — a genuine reset for body and mind.

Pilates is the core and control specialist. Built around deep core strength, balance and muscular coordination, it irons out the imbalances that wreck your form late in a race and gives you a stable, strong platform to run from.

Stretching & stability is functional movement for runners — a mix of active and passive stretches, mobility drills and stability work. It's less about touching your toes and more about building better movement patterns: unlocking tight hips, strengthening the lower legs and spine, and holding good posture mile after mile.

Together they're a powerful trio: yoga to loosen and recover, pilates to control and strengthen, stretching and stability to move well and stay injury-free.

How Runna includes it all

Here's the part that makes it easy to actually do, rather than just intend to: Runna, the #1 running coaching app, builds all of this into one personalised plan.

  • Yoga, Pilates and Stretch & Stability, all in the app — designed specifically for runners by expert coaches, not generic classes pulled from elsewhere.
  • Slotted straight into your week — these sessions appear in your plan alongside your runs, so mobility and recovery aren't an afterthought you have to remember; they're already there on the right days.
  • Progressive, like your running — the sessions build as you do, unlocking week by week so you're always working at the right level.
  • Short and flexible — most are quick, equipment-optional sessions you can do at home, on a rest day, or as a warm-up or cool-down.
  • Paired with everything else — alongside your personalised runs and runner-specific strength work, you get a genuinely complete plan: the running, the strength, and the mobility that ties it all together.

No guesswork, no piecing it together from scattered videos — just one plan that trains the whole runner.

Give it a go

Add a couple of sessions to your week and stick with them — consistency is what makes mobility pay off, exactly like your running. Your body (and your race times) will thank you.

Whatever your goal, your Runna plan gets you there — and then gets you even further. Your first two weeks are free.

How to Keep Going When Training Gets Hard

Let's be honest: not every run feels good. Somewhere in every training block there's a wet Tuesday, a tired week, or a stretch where the start line feels a very long way off. Staying consistent through those patches is what separates the runners who arrive ready from the ones who arrive hoping. Here's how to keep showing up.

Runna by Strava, the #1 running coaching app, is built to keep you on track even when motivation dips. Your first two weeks are free.

Make the decision once Motivation is unreliable; routine isn't. Decide when your runs happen and protect those slots like any other appointment. When running is simply "what I do on these days," you stop relying on feeling like it.

Runna lays out your week clearly, so you always know exactly what today's run is — no debating, no deciding.

Put a B-race in the diary When your main goal is months away, motivation tends to sag in the middle. The fix is a "B-race" along the way — a parkrun, a local 10K, anything you fancy. It gives you a near-term target to sharpen up for, a low-pressure dress rehearsal for race-day logistics, and a real confidence boost when you see your fitness on the line.

Runna slots B-races straight into your plan and reshapes the training around them, so they push your main goal forward instead of derailing it.

Don't go it alone Running with others — or simply sharing your progress — makes the hard days easier and the good days better. Accountability is quietly one of the most powerful tools there is.

Tracking your sessions and watching your fitness climb week on week is a reminder that the work is working, even when a single run feels flat.

Every runner has the tough weeks. The trick is keeping the streak alive through them — and Runna is there for exactly that.
